Opening doors to MODI

MODI (Mobilitätsdateninfrastruktur) consists of two parts: "Das Verkehrsnetz CH bildet das Schweizer Verkehrssystem einheitlich ab; NADIM ermöglicht die Bereitstellung und den Austausch von Daten zu Mobilitätsangeboten und Infrastruktur." Help identify data coverage gaps or opportunities for new mobility services in specific Swiss regions.

MODI is a voluntary national mobility data infrastructure being established by Switzerland to improve the exchange and use of mobility data across all transport modes. Addressing the growing gap between increasing mobility demand and limited infrastructure expansion, MODI will enable standardized provision, linking, and access to mobility data while allowing data owners to control sharing permissions.

The infrastructure consists of two components: Verkehrsnetz CH (providing spatial reference and linking) and NADIM (facilitating data exchange for passenger mobility, freight transport, and infrastructure). Built and operated by the Competence Center for Mobility Data (KOMODA), MODI will be developed step-by-step with seven prioritized use cases for the initial phase, costing an average of 25 million CHF annually and financed equally by rail and road infrastructure funds, with future user-based financing.

In this challenge, we use Apertus to propose a hackathon challenge in order to support further development of this project.

MODI Connect Hackathon

Shaping the Multimodal Mobility Landscape

The Swiss Federal Council is establishing the national Mobility Data Infrastructure (MODI) to revolutionize how we move people and goods across Switzerland. We need your creativity and technical expertise to bring this vision to life! Here is a proposal of a hackathon with three core tracks.

🌟 Our mission: Develop innovative solutions that leverage MODI's infrastructure to create seamless multimodal transportation experiences, enrich our open transport data ecosystem, and identify powerful open-source tools to accelerate Switzerland's mobility transformation.

📊 Track 1: Multimodal Transportation Innovation

Design the future of connected mobility in Switzerland

Challenge: Create concepts and prototypes for seamless multimodal journey planning that combine:

  • Public transport (train, bus, tram, boat)
  • Shared mobility (bikes, e-scooters, car-sharing)
  • Private vehicle integration
  • Freight and logistics solutions

What we're looking for:

  • Smart routing algorithms that consider real-time conditions
  • User-friendly interfaces for complex multimodal journeys
  • Solutions that reduce congestion and environmental impact
  • Integration opportunities with existing Swiss transport apps

🌍 Track 2: Open Transport Data Crowdsourcing

Help build Switzerland's comprehensive mobility data ecosystem

Challenge: Develop strategies and tools to crowdsourcing, validate, and maintain open transport data that feeds into MODI's infrastructure.

What we're looking for:

  • Gamification approaches for data collection
  • Quality assurance mechanisms for crowdsourced data
  • Solutions for real-time data updates (construction, delays, events)
  • Methods to identify data gaps and prioritize collection efforts
  • Privacy-preserving data sharing approaches

🔧 Track 3: Open Source Technology Discovery

Find and evaluate the best open-source tools for MODI's success

Challenge: Research, test, and recommend open-source packages that can power MODI's infrastructure and applications.

What we're looking for:

  • Data processing and standardization tools (DCAT-AP-CH compliance)
  • Geospatial analysis and mapping libraries
  • Real-time data streaming and synchronization solutions
  • API frameworks for mobility data exchange
  • Security and privacy tools for sensitive transport data

🏆 Judging Criteria

  • Innovation: How creative and forward-thinking is your solution?
  • Feasibility: Can your idea be realistically implemented within MODI's framework?
  • Impact: What benefits does your solution bring to Swiss mobility users and providers?
  • Scalability: Can your solution grow with Switzerland's evolving mobility needs?
  • Open Source Alignment: How well does your solution leverage or contribute to open-source ecosystems?

🎁 Prizes & Opportunities

  • Grand Prize: CHF 5,000 + opportunity to pilot your solution with MODI stakeholders
  • Category Winners: CHF 2,000 each + mentorship from BAV and transport industry experts
  • Special Recognition: Best open-source contribution, most innovative data approach, strongest community impact

📅 Event Details

  • Duration: 48 hours of intensive innovation
  • Location: Hybrid (Bern + virtual participation)
  • Participants: Developers, data scientists, urban planners, transport enthusiasts, students, and anyone passionate about Switzerland's mobility future

🚀 Why This Matters

Your contributions will directly shape how millions of people navigate Switzerland every day. By participating, you're not just building apps—you're creating the foundation for a more sustainable, efficient, and connected Swiss mobility system.

Join us in building the future of Swiss transportation—one line of code, one dataset, one innovative idea at a time!
